A Long Lens
My Preferred Methods for Plant Photography
Shooting plants with a long lens gives a fantastic look
I often shoot in the range 300 to 600mm
Backgrounds and foregrounds become beautifully soft using a wide aperture and long focal length
Multiple Exposures
Combine multiple images to create a painterly / abstract look
Take a series of images from different positions
Combine the images using software, or you may have a camera that merges them allowing you to see the final image straight away
Shooting into the Light
Shoot around sunrise or sunset with the widest aperture on your lens
You’ll need a clear sky so that the sun is adding light and colour to the background
A Macro lens
My Nikon 105 macro lens is of course great for macro photography, but the f2.8 aperture also allows you to isolate the subject from the rest of the scene
I love using this lens, great for portraits as well
Focal length 320mm
Focal length 560mm
